Southern California is known for sun, surf, and one more thing…stellar Mexican food! The diversity of the Los Angeles region has brought many tasty traditions to our town; there are over 30 Mexican restaurants to choose from in the South Bay alone! While we’ve said our goodbyes to Beach Mex, a new contender has rolled in on Rosecrans: Caló Kitchen and Tequilla.
How it All Began
Owner Clemente Heredia isn’t the first in his family to start up a California eatery. As a former student at Loyola Marymount, the South Bay is near and dear to his heart. His family has a legacy of restaurant ownership dating all the way back to the 60’s.
The family now owns five Mexican restaurants, and it was only natural that he carried on the tradition right here in El Segundo. The items on the menu of each restaurant include several family recipes. The new restaurant, however, is a departure from the typical Mexican restaurant image.
What Sets Caló Kitchen Apart?
With one look at the menu, it’s clear Caló Kitchen is aiming for a classier, upscale ambiance…with prices to match. The least expensive appetizer, the queso fundido, is $11, with the price of the average main course hovering around the $20 mark. The price is far from the only difference. While the menu does include traditional tacos, it ups the ante with options like prime skirt steak and a seafood trio. The menu also includes organic options.
The atmosphere is distinctly unique. When most people picture a local Mexican spot, the image that comes to mind involves a mix of old booths, wooden tables and chairs, and brightly colored Mexican decor.
Caló takes a much more modern approach, with geometric lighting and dressed-up bar. The overall presence of the restaurant exudes a night-out vibe, more so than the family-friendly atmosphere of most local Mexican eateries.
Caló Kitchen doesn’t stop at just high-end entrees. At the bar, guests can pick from more than 100 sipping tequilas! Their “Tahona” style process results in a tequila with a smoother, sweeter profile.
Is the upscale price worth it?
According to over 200 Yelp reviews, the answer is a nearly unanimous YES. Between 162 five-star reviews and an average of 4.5 stars among all reviews, it’s difficult to find a negative comment.
Reviewers frequently mentioned the superb service, memorable dining experience, and impressively good margaritas. One reviewer went as far as to say, “These margaritas will change your life!”. Some reviewers even appointed Caló Kitchen as their new favorite restaurant.
