Uno duo, trio – This isn’t language class…It’s a classification of gourmet burgers from a new fast-casual franchise of “gourmet tiny burgers” (as Planning Commission Chair Ryan Baldino recently dubbed) hitting El Segundo in March 2019 called Burgerim.

Burgerim, a specialty burger concept that serves 3-ounce gourmet burgers with 11 different patty choices, was granted approval by the Planning Commission to serve beer and wine at its upcoming El Segundo location. The Commission voted 5-0 to forward the recommended approval to City Council for its final approval. The matter will appear on City Council’s Consent Calendar at its Feb. 19 meeting, according to Gregg McClain, planning manager for the city.

A representative from Liquor License Agents told the Commission the El Segundo franchise will be a 1,200-square-foot operation with 267-square-feet of indoor dining space offering 18 seats. There will no outdoor dining. Two nearby eateries serving sushi and Italian cuisine also offer beer and wine.

In a moment of levity, after the rep spoke about Burgerim and as she was passing menus for Commissioners to check out, Chair Ryan Baldino asked if the burgers were “just basically little sliders.” To which the rep said, “3-ounce gourmet burgers.” Fellow commissioners and audience members laughed. Baldino apologized. And when Baldino went to close that agenda item, he asked, “Anyone else with comments on the gourmet tiny burgersl?” more laughter and chuckles could be heard.

Burgerim will open in March 2019 (pending construction & permits) at 831 North Douglas Street in The Edge. The franchised operation, which offers delivery, makes 3-ounce gourmet burgers with options of 11 different patties (beef, dry aged beef, Wagyu beef, Merguez, a spicy beef, turkey, chicken, salmon, veggie, and chorizo), six different sauces, nine toppings, and two bun styles, also serves chicken wings and chicken strips, a grilled chicken salad and a chopped salad, fries, desserts, and drinks. Their Type 41 liquor license allows them to sell beer and wine.

In operation since 2011, Burgerim has franchised its concept in over seven countries with opening 160 locations. Nearby locations include Beverly Hills, downtown Los Angeles, Gardena, Hollywood, Lakewood, Long Beach, Marina del Rey, Mar Vista, Torrance, and West Hollywood, with a Redondo Beach location opening soon.

The El Segundo Burgerim is expected to be open daily from 10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m., according to the Liquor License Agents rep who addressed the Planning Commission.
