After years of severe drought, California has finally got the rain we desperately needed. Our unseasonably wet winter has wiped drought conditions off the So-Cal map, providing dramatic relief to previously lackluster reservoirs and snow-packs. While this is fantastic news for 2019, California is still likely to experience more frequent and severe droughts in the long run.

For South Bay homeowners, this means our lush lawns and flower gardens might need to move in a more water-conscious direction: succulent gardens. Succulents are a group of plants that store water in their leaves, making them particularly tolerant of the dry, sunny conditions L.A. County experiences most of the year.

Succulents are low-maintenance once you learn how to care for them, but with so many unique, colorful varieties it can be challenging to keep these desert beauties healthy. That’s why one El Segundo local, Cheri Noda, started her very own non-profit called The Succulent Babies Society.

The Story Behind the Succulent Society

Cheri has always had a passion for gardening. In past 5 years, she has sold hundreds of quality succulents through her Succulent Babies Facebook page. Her goal? To provide healthy, gorgeous plants to people who can’t afford the high prices of in-store succulents. One small succulent at Home Depot can cost double the price of a traditional plant!

To help make these unique plants more accessible, Cheri offers her 4000 Facebook followers discounted succulents for just a dollar. As a bonus, she offers helpful advice so her customers can keep their plants growing strong. Now, Cheri is expanding Succulent Babies Society to more directly cater to El Segundo garden lovers.

How Cheri’s Bringing Stylish Succulents to the South Bay

To share her love of succulents with the community, Cheri is hosting a weekly Succulent Society meeting via online live feed, plus a monthly meeting at the Dry Jungle Nursery.

At every monthly meetup, participants can look forward to:

  • An exciting new plant of the month
  • Live guest speakers
  • Information on the care and maintenance of different succulent varieties
  • Light refreshments
  • And lots of new friends!

The group will also connect online through the Succulent Babies Society Facebook page.

What’s Coming Up Next for the Succulent Society

Thus coming Saturday, March 23rd 2019 at noon, the succulent society group invites all gardening aficionados to their first meeting! The group will meet at:

Dry Jungle Nursery
2007 South Hughes Way
El Segundo CA 90245

Cheri aspires to bring our community closer together, both online and in person, to learn about these amazing plants and how to bring them into our local landscapes. As the group grows, she also hopes to create a strong community network to share gardening ideas, projects, and inspiration.

Thanks, Cheri, for doing your part to bring beauty and sustainability to El Segundo! For more information about the Succulent Society, see the flyer below or email Cheri at Cherrisnowsweet@aol.com.
